Kate Smith loved most of her art classes, but as a senior at Millard North High School, she lacked the time.

As a freshman, she took a drama class and an art class. Drama provided Kate the opportunity to get to know the upperclassmen. She connected herself with art because her grandfather’s past with pottery and the kindness of her art teacher.

Even though she had these connections, she dedicated her time to writing.

She tried creative writing, but what she liked the most was journalism. Kate wrote about her school’s unified bowling team and how it included the students that have disabilities. She interviewed the special education staff and students and felt connected.

With a deadline of the next day, Kate had found herself interviewing Millard North’s winning volleyball team. She interviewed the volleyball players, creating content that made the front page.

This is only the beginning for Kate’s writing success.
